How to Help

Giving to others makes you happier and healthier!  Volunteer work not only benefits the individuals receiving the help; it also bolsters the volunteers themselves and connects communities across demographics and differences.  It is one of the most altruistic and rewarding acts an individual can do.  If you are passionate about prison reform, please consider lending us a hand.  You can make a real difference in just a few minutes or hours a week.  Check out the list below to see if any of our opportunities match your interests or skills.  If you have something you'd like to contribute that isn't listed, just drop us a line.  Our minds are wide open.

ATLaS Justice Center is looking for volunteers to assist with the following projects or volunteers with expertise or experience in the following areas:

  1. Curriculum Development:  The most important voices in prison reform are those of prison survivors.  Prison survivors know firsthand what reentry services are needed and how to make those services work best.  We are always on the look out for help in developing and writing various curriculums.
  2. Teachers:  Nearly every one of our classes is taught or co-taught by prison survivors.  Those classes that are co-taught pair prison survivors with professionals from various fields.  In order to teach an ATLaS class, teachers undergo training about mass incarceration, prison life, trauma, as well as ATLaS' philosophy and core values.  If you are interested in teaching, please contact us for upcoming teacher trainings.
  3. Art/Creative Writing:  ATLaS is beginning to branch out into new social media and forums.  We are always looking for individuals who are passionate about prison and reentry reform and love to write about it.  We are also looking for artists or art lovers who would like to assist with the curation of our online art gallery, Freedom of Art.
  4. Event Planning and Organization:  A key component to successful nonprofit is fundraising and networking with our community.  This means a lot of events.  If you love to plan events and meet community members from all walks of life, this is for you!
  5. Graphic Design:  As we obtain data, ATLaS puts it into a format most people can digest quickly and easily: graphics!  If you are good at condensing data into beautiful graphics and want to help, please let us know.
  6. Photography and Videography:  Stories are perhaps the most effective way to communicate data and dismantle stereotypes.  ATLaS has a number of projects in the works that require skills in the areas of photography and videography.  If you would like to join these projects, please let us know.
  7. Statistical Analysis:  Much of our work is based on data and evidence.  Being able to provide the public and donors with statistically significant data is essential to our stability and growth.  Therefore, ATLaS is currently engaged in data analysis and is looking for volunteers to assist with that analysis.
  8. Psychology:  All of ATLaS' classes aim to provide psycho-education to our students.  This includes trauma education, emotional intelligence, and anger management.  Specifically, ATLaS is developing a series of educational programs about the trauma associated with prison and its attendant symptoms.  In addition, we are looking at creative ways to make therapy available to large numbers of individuals, so that all those in need have access.  We are in need of input from individuals with a background and/or degree in psychology.
  9. Education:  Much of what ATLaS does revolves around education.  We are always looking for input on teaching philosophy, pedagogy, and techniques, as well as assistance in developing new curriculums.  We are also looking for additional teachers to help teach our ID class.
  10. General Research:  We try to keep up with all the new information coming out about mass incarceration and correctional systems, but there is a lot!  If you are good at research and love to read interesting articles, we need you!
  11. Drivers:  We are working on setting up transportation for prison survivors to our community classes as well as transportation for families to visitation at all of Arizona's prison complexes.
  12. ADC User Guide:  ATLaS is working on creating a user guide to help families navigate the complex bureaucracy of the Department of Corrections, from phone calls to putting money on your loved one's books to visitation.  This guide will break down each process and answer frequently asked questions.
If nothing else, please follow us on social media and share, share, share!
                                                                            We appreciate your support!
